From Scraps To Garden

Romaine Lettuce: romaine lettuce bottom was taken from store-bought lettuce. It is placed on top of a breathable stand submerged in water. It will sit in water in a sunny warm spot, and in 3-4 days, we should see sprouts of new leaves.

Garlic: garlic clove was left over from a bulb in the refrigerator. It had already started to sprout at the top from the fridge. We added the clove to the top of a hydro tube filled with water. We should see roots develop in a day or two.

Cucumber Seeds: these tiny cucumber seeds will soak for 2 hrs today in water until softened. We will then drain the water and place them in the growing tray under a dark dome cover. Once a day, we will “rinse” the seeds in the dome under water, drain, and return to the growing tray. Sprouts could grow quickly with this method.

Squash Seeds: Same as the cucumber seed, only they will be in a clear dome cover.

Whole Potato: the potato was submerged in water only halfway and set in a sunny spot. In a few days, we should see new roots develop. Then after a couple of weeks, we should see new shoots sprout from the top of the potato. This is when the potato can be divided into pieces and planted in a garden.

Cherry Tomato: the tomato seeds were taken from a cherry tomato. They will sit in a cool dark room for 2 days so that mold can eat away and remove any protective coating on the seeds. Then we will rinse them, move them to a damp paper towel in a ziplock baggy and place them in the dark again for another couple of days until sprouts form. Then we plant them in the potting soil tray.

Avocado Seeds: these were taken from making guacamole – These were rinsed under warm water to remove the slimy flesh coating on them. Next, they are placed in a baggy with a damp paper towel and will sit in a cool dark place for a week. They are expected to sprout, and we will hopefully see a root! After it roots, we will place it on a filled water bottle until leaves emerge. (takes about a month)
